OK. No idea what “cockles” are, but I just wanted to pass along a bit of Christmas cheer. One of the plug-in companies that I really love is PSP, and they have a stellar deal on their classic EQ bundle going on right now. If you have been thinking about treating yourself to some new eq toys this holiday, I can’t think of a better way to do it at this price.

In my opinion, this book is a must-buy for any audio engineer, whether you are in live sound, studio recording, etc.  This book is also known by names like “The Yamaha Book” (and similar names), as this was originally written for Yamaha.

What? A technical book written in 1987 (last updated in 1990) is a necessity??

…so the holidays aren’t here for over a month, but now is a good time to start deciding on what new studio goodies you’ll be looking for.

Upgrading your recording setup is a very tricky and important process.  Spending the right amount of money on the right piece(s) of gear can be daunting.  The last thing you need is to be in debt on a piece of gear that you don’t actually need or to get an awesome deal on an insignificant upgrade. To make great mixes, you need great ears and knowledge of your processing gear/plug-ins – but one of the most simple and most important mixing processes comes in the form of the mute button.  In my opinion, the mute button is often more important than any plug-in, whether its the Compressimaxer 40000 that cost $5,000 or a simple DigiRack plug-in. While planning for some recording projects this summer, I realized that a few gobos (mobile, often absorptive, sound isolation barriers) would really be of benefit.    However, I began searching online and found out I would have to spend more than $400 for each gobo… ouch.  I decided to build some myself. Arguably the most important element of making awesome recordings has nothing to do with tubes, transistors, or electrons moving through copper.

Your room’s acoustics are extremely important!  Even the most expensive signal chain in the world can be greatly hampered if not used in a great sounding room.  Project and home studios can benefit greatly from even a small investment in treatment (such as absorption for first reflections and parallel surfaces plus bass trapping)

It’s the end of a long mixing day, and the mix is sounding awesome in the control room.  We burn off a quick mix and take in the car on a CD for the drive home…

YUCK! It sounds terrible!  Why does it sound bad in the car (or in headphones/boombox/etc) but awesome in the control room??

As an engineer, you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to create near-endless sonic possibilities.  Mics, preamps, compressors, EQs, plug-ins, virutal instruments, other effects, jecklin discs…

Its no wonder its such a daunting challenge to figure out which pieces of gear to use on each source, and then figure out how to blend them all together musically… Spending too much time switching equipment to “find” sounds can really drag a session down, but rushing through things can sacrifice sonic quality (or at least sonic “interest”). H/W Buffers – friend or foe?? November 22, 2008

We’ve all been here:

You are tracking a great band and they are really grooving this take (the best one of the day).  Halfway through the song, the sound glitches, recording stops, and the dreaded “H/W BUFFER ERROR” message appears… which is the equivalent of a big middle finger.

What is a H/W buffer (sometimes also called audio buffer)? Why do you need to change it? What’s the difference between a 1024 sample buffer and a 32 sample buffer?  How do buffers affect latency? (more…)
